Bought a newer iPhone or a higher-end Android phone recently? There's a decent chance you've noticed an unfamiliar file extension showing up in your photo library: .heic. It's easy to dismiss as just another annoying format to wrangle, but the High Efficiency Image Container is genuinely one of the more meaningful upgrades in consumer photography in recent memory.
The Case for Efficiency
HEIC's biggest selling point is right there in the name. It builds on the HEVC video compression standard — the same underlying tech used to stream 4K video — and applies it to still photos. The payoff is real: HEIC delivers noticeably better image quality at roughly half the file size of a comparable JPEG. For anyone regularly bumping up against their phone's storage limit, that's effectively doubling how many photos fit before the dreaded "Storage Almost Full" notice shows up.
It's Not Just About Smaller Files

HEIC renders the same scene smoothly, with none of that abrupt transition.
Is Compatibility Still an Issue?
There was a stretch, a few years back, when sending a HEIC photo to a Windows user meant they simply couldn't open it. That friction has mostly disappeared. As of 2026, Windows 11 and current versions of Android and macOS all support HEIC out of the box. And when you upload a HEIC image through something like Instagram or WhatsApp, your phone quietly converts it to JPEG behind the scenes before it ever reaches the recipient, so nobody on the other end even notices the format underneath.
HEIC is, at this point, the clear successor to an aging JPEG standard. It reflects what most of us actually want from our phones — better quality, richer data like Live Photos and depth information, and smaller files, all at the same time. It's become the practical default for the mobile-first era we're already living in.
